Johnny Depp and Wyona Rider show us how being very different has its up and down sides in the world of the 1950's as an isolated boy named Edward Scissorhands is introduced to the outside world when his father dies. He has been given a set of scissors for hands and he is able to cut hair, sculpt landscape and groom animals in exotic ways but he cannot speak. He wants to love the girl but physically he is limited in what he can do. The pressures to conform and fit in are shown in many small ways that build up and we see a tale of unrequited love to its conclusion. There are circumstances that show the true attitudes of the people he encounters and finds he must retreat because he cannot find his path in his new world. Prejudice keeps the lovers apart.
