He was Rabindranath Tagore's son and the first student of 'Santiniketan Vidyalaya'. After the establishment of Visva-Bharati in 1921, the meaning of Visva-Bahrati is 'Viswavidyalaya' or 'University', he was the first and chief secretary of the same. In 1951 when Visva-Bharati became a central university he was the first Vice-Chancellor of the university. Rathindranath was the representative creation of Rabindranath Tagore's educational thoughts. He was scientist, painter, poet, writer, artisan and as well as the implementer of his thoughts. By his effort 'Sriniketan' came into being. Besides this, the introduction of 'Batik' and 'Leather-work' in this country was the contribution of Rathindarnath Tagore . He imported maize, corn, clover, alfa-alfa, and potato and tomato seeds from abroad and introduced the same in 'Santiniketan'. Today's greenery of 'Santiniketan' was introduced by Rabindranath but reaching its highest peak by Rathindranath Tagore. He succeeded to cultivate 'Rose' in the barren land of 'Santiniketan'. Use of tractor to cultivate land was introduced in 'Santiniketan'.
