This is a beautifully-produced book on the history of the French Riviera, from its beginnings when discovered by English travelers in the nineteenth century through to the era of Tender is the Night. It uses Edith Wharton as a framework for the story, but it is by no means limited to her. There are many lavish color and black and white illustrations of the scenes. If you want to lose yourself in the French Riviera without going there, this is a good buy. I left one star off because it really needs a map. I used one from an old Let's Go guide, which worked well. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book as a tantalizing introduction to the Cote d'Azur.
