Edirin: A Play

Uloho Village Square
The entire Uloho village is filled with an aura of festivity. Light comes on stage at the beautifully decorated village square. King Koko, members of the council of chiefs and the entire villagers are enjoying themselves by the colourful display of the sheshegbe masquerade. The villagers give loud cheers as the masquerade ends its exhilarating performance and exits the stage. The drummers change the rhythm of their beat to announce and usher in the maidens being initiated into womanhood. The crowd give a deafening joyful shout as the maidens dance in barebodied except for a piece of white wrapper tied around their waists with colourful beads on their necks and waists. The maidens dance rhythmically to the tunes of the drums for a while and then dance out of the stage to the bamboo bench prepared for them. Chief Tovie raises his adjudju as a signal to the audience to be quiet as King Koko rises up to speak.
