Edge of the Woods

Erin has bought a ramshackle house, in a coastal village near Sydney in Australia. Her neighbour, Doreen, is murdered in a shed bordering Erin's property. Unbeknown to Erin, criminals had been using this shed and her house while it stood vacant for many years. Megan, the actress daughter of Doreen, is an amateur sleuth who seeks to solve the murder of her troubled mother. Doreen is a journalist who has stirred up a great many people by her stories about them as she had never let facts get in the way of a good story. Megan looks for suspects among sensationalist stories Doreen has written. Erin is guilty over Doreen having been murdered on her property. Consequently, she tries to help Megan solve the case. Megan inherits Doreen's run- down mansion, which is partly buried in encroaching woodland, next door to Erin.
The back story concerns both Megan and Erin coming to terms with parents and family history. Erin has abandonment issues as her father, Brian, left her, as a baby, with his parents, in rural New Zealand, after which he disappeared. Erin grows up resented by various relations. Brian turns up unexpectedly and tells Erin his story. Brian and Erin go on a road trip to New Zealand. Meanwhile Megan is satisfied she has solved the case.
Erin and Brian have departed suddenly on road trip in New Zealand because some criminals have targeted Erin, suspecting her of knowing too much about them and snooping. It seems to Brian, it is safer for Erin if they both leave the country and do a road trip in New Zealand. They explore their roots as descendants of early Scottish settlers. Brian's mother was from Belfast and raised her family, and Erin, to have town ways which has created a rift with Brian's father, who was a war vet, with strong roots in the wild hinterland. They explore the traumas in this rift between town and country, that has occurred in their family home, causing family conflicts, that were a part of Erin having been abandoned, as a baby, when her English mother had died. Brian had married Tess, Erin's mother, who had tragically died.
