Outstanding collection of personal and social experiences

This book was given to me many years ago by my mother for a birthday present. Throughout the years I have returned to this small book to re-read its enjoyable essays about the meaning of self, society, science, and the meaning of it all. Its authors range from Jack Kerouac to Margaret Mead to Adlai E. Stevenson to Arthur C. Clarke. Its broad catagories are divided into "Defining Oneself and Others", Searching for Meaning in a Complex Society", Attaining A Unique Place", "responding to Creative Experience", and "Surving Through Science". Perhaps the best thing to be said about this book is that it addresses many of the age-old questions we all face as human beings while avoiding the inane trappings of new-age psycho babble. This book's small size makes it an outstanding carry along while backpacking, hiking, fishing, or just roaming around. It is also a very suitable nightstand companion or even a quick read on a lazy afternoon. No matter how you approach this book, it is a keeper and can be treasured throughout the years. It tantalizes your mind and soul with the authors provocative ideas and experiences and should stimulate similiar responses from the reader.
