The intense passion and storytelling magic of New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Lowell blazes in this remarkable reimagined classic of desire, hope, and dangerous destiny-as the fires of Eden burn hotter than ever before. Eden Burning Paradise calls to Chase Wilcox. A man of science fascinated by the rebirth of life in the wake of cataclysmic natural upheaval, he is drawn to the lush beauty of the island of Hawaii and the secrets it holds -- while escaping the destruction of his own personal world. Here where warm breezes caress the skin and vibrant colors assault the senses -- and where dangerous fires rage unseen beneath the earth's surface -- Chase plans to immerse himself in his work...and somehow heal and forget. The last thing he needs or wants is love. But the island is home to many unexpected wonders, which is why Nicole Ballard could never leave it. A research assistant, an artist, and a dancer -- a tall, stunning redhead who goes by the stage name of Pele, the goddess of fire -- she, too, hides a secret pain, releasing her pent-up sensuality to the accompaniment of native drums before a mesmerized audience. Nicole has never met a man quite like Chase, strong, intense, and brilliant. And he, in turn, is fascinated by this remarkable woman who seems to be a breathtaking force of nature in her own right. Fate has cast them together, causing a chain reaction that neither imagined in their most secret dreams. Joined on an important scientific project that carries them into the verdant heart of a tropical wonder land, Nicole and Chase will be forced to confront their own lingering inner darkness, while resisting a newly inflamed need to touch, to give...to care. But in the shadows of Kilauea, all restraints will be broken, as emotions flow as hot and free as rivers of molten lava. And desire will erupt, as unpredictable and dangerous as the living volcano, transforming the very landscape of their lives -- a torrent that no power on earth can contain, a passion that bums like fire.
This is a reprint but I didn't read the first book. However this one states in the back of the book that it is and that the author further fleshed it out. Seems like there is a lot of stuff describing volcanoes and the dancing and such. I was looking for more stuff describing the relationship of the H and h. Chase met Nicole with his opinion pretty much formed. He should have been ashamed of himself because he would have NEVER wanted anyone to have done that to his young daughter he seemed to not be so sure of herself because of a very selfish mother. Because of this selfish woman Chase colors ALL women with the same gold digging brush except for his sister in law. He believes that Nicole only wants his brother and his brother is married. So he sets out to cause her, Nicole's downfall. After getting what he wants he then tells his brother that having Nicole in his bed was like having a corpse there. She looked to have all this fire and passion but upon further inspection it wasn't there at all. Perhaps the author was using the volcanoes as some symolism there. Maybe she would come alive with the right circumstances and the right man. Was Chase that man? Didn't seem like it at that time. Will he be able to make up for his harsh words? Can a person ever make up for something like that? This story is more a long the lines of a slow build up to that one love with a couple of stumbling blocks placed in the way, but the reader is left believing in the HEA.
My favourite book so far

This is one book I will never forget. It's a story about a man protecting his brother from someone who he thinks is a homewrecker... and we soon find out she is far from it. "Pele" (Nicole) is one of the most interesting characters I've ever read about, and her lifestyle is equally as interesting. This story by far is the best I've read in a very long time - I just couldn't peel myself away from it until I had found out if they (the two main characters) would be together or not :)
Good Read for Zoning Out

If you just want to zone out, go somewhere else, live in someone else's skin for awhile, this might be the book for you if you're into romance. I found myself wishing the female lead character wasn't so wimpy and was a stronger person, but all in all, a good read.
A little gem

This book, I understand, is a reprinted-reworked version of an older book. I never saw the original, but enjoyed this one very much. The ingredients are classic Lowell: the wounded hero and heroine, each thinking they have nothing to offer anyone after having been wounded earlier in life, she by an insensitive former husband and he by that stock romance figure, the bitchy, predatory, non-maternal ex-wife. The hero, Chase, makes a monumental error in judgment about Nicole and hurts her terribly, then has to figure out how to repair the damage, hoping against hope that he hasn't lost what he didn't realize he had until it was gone. This is not a novel of great sweep; it is just a simple story of misunderstanding, conflict and ultimate redemption and reconciliation, but it is a delightful read. Lowell uses her metaphors well; the volcano, the dance, the drums, the delicate wildlife all add to the atmosphere of the place and flesh out the characters. No surprises, but well worth an afternoon or evening with a cup of tea (especially when you'd rather be where it's always 80 degrees and teeming with life).
Great romance in a great setting

The previous reviewer says that this is just a reprint. That isn't quite true. The last couple of years, Elizabeth Lowell has been rewriting some of her older romances. They tend to be about 50 percent longer than the originals, and IMHO she is doing a good job of improving them. Yes, it is the same story as her old Fires of Eden, but it is considerably longer, with added scenes, more explanation, characters fleshed out better, and a few things deleted. I read and reread Fires of Eden until my copy vanished during a move. I was more than happy to find this story in hardback. I'll be rereading it again.
