For young readers: Nice introduction to ecology

First, it is a shame that it costs so much to acquire a copy of one of these books. These are for kids, and the price tag is appalling. Second, though, the Time Life series on "A Child's First Library of Learning" contains many volumes that would add to a young reader's understanding of the larger world. I think the DK Eyewitness Books series is preferable, but this is also a fine series. Third, let's take a look at this specific volume. When my son was a young reader, we acquired many volumes in this series for him as well as numerous works in the Eyewitness Books series. Oddly, this does not begin with any kind of definition of "ecology." The idea sort of emerges over a series of queries. I'm not sure but what it would not have been good to begin with such a definition. Time-Life books are based on a series of questions related to the theme of the particular work. First question: "Are all forests the same?" Answer--No! There are many kinds of forests, from tropical forests to evergreen forests. Next question (Page 6): "What is a tropical rain forest?" The book describes what defines such an environment, such as hot weather, lots of rain, and a great variety of life forms. Other typical questions, picked at random: "Are lakes and ponds the same?"; "Why are some deserts spreading?"; "Why don't grasslands have trees?"; "Hoe do animals live through the cold Arctic winter?"; "Why is the earth's ozone layer so important?" All in all, this would be a good book for kids to read if they were interested in the various environments on earth and what the importance of those are.
