Set in contemporary Kansas, Worth's novel opens with orphaned rancher Dana Barlow and her Asperger's-afflicted brother Stevie discovering a prize bull has been killed. Taking this as a threat from their mysterious neighbor, Caryn Roark, Dana visits Roark only to return home to face a tornado. Protected from the storm by another mysterious stranger, Bren Donovan, Dana wonders what--if any--connection there is between Bren and Caryn and how to stop her neighbor from taking what's rightfully hers. Worth develops Caryn's character fairly well, but there are too many cult cliches in the novel. Bren (Brendan) Donovan is almost too perfect to be true, but the plot anchors him in reality. Dana's brother Stevie behaves like the Dustin Hoffman "Rain Man" character throughout most of the novel, and this seems a bit inconsistent with what I've read from psychology books regarding the nature of Asberger's syndrome. It's trite, but it's a decent day's read.
Gothic suspense in a contemporary setting

Dana Barlow is struggling to keep things together. As if trying to hold on to her family's land and being guardian to her autistic brother, Stephen, wasn't enough, now there are strange things are happening on her property. And Dana is convinced her neighbors, the Universal Unity Church, and their leader, Caryn Roark, have something to do with it. When mysterious Bren Donavan saves Dana's life, protecting her during a tornado, she is both intrigued and wary. He seems to truly care about her and has an instant rapport with her brother. But who is he really? And what is his connection to her neighbors? When Dana & Stephen find their lives in danger, Dana is forced to turn to Bren for help. But can she truly trust him? And Bren, although drawn to Dana, wonders if he can put the past behind him and trust her with his secrets. Echoes of Danger has a gothic feel, even though the setting is contemporary Kansas. Bren and Dana each struggle with their faith and trusting God during the dark circumstances they find themselves a part of. Yet they persevere and continue to try and do what is right, even when the outcome may not be what they wished. I greatly enjoyed reading Echoes of Danger and look forward to reading more of Lenora Worth's books.
