Ebenezer: Hither By Thy Help i've Come

in to Heal or M2H is the name Dr. Geelhoed uses for his many missions to bring modern surgery to the poor and destitute of our World. This book only covers four of these missions, but what missions they were; Nigeria was in retrospect fairly normal and gives us an idea of the things he and his team face every day. The next was to South Sudan and landed them in the middle of a war with fifty caliber bullets aerating his tent while waiting to be rescued by the UN and their Indian Army contingent. Not done, Dr. Geelhoed and his team were the only medical team there and proceeded to bring first aid to the injured, training the Indian Army Medics in emergency treatment and even conducting amputations. Next, they flew to Liberia, landing in the Province of Lofa, where no sooner there, than you guessed it, the Ebola Epidemic erupted. As the only medical team in the area, their expertise proved to be invaluable. Catching cerebral malaria, Dr. Geelhoed narrowly escaped death, but thanks to his base Hospital at George Washington University, where he is Professor of Surgery, and spending thirty days in their Intensive Care Unit, finally recovered in time to run in the Marine Corp's Marathon! Far from being idle during his recovery, Dr. G, as our family calls him, brought together one of his dream projects, the construction of a mobile surgical trailer and heavy duty ambulance, from which his mission to the Philippines was to use as their headquarters. The fact that it was movable was the breakthrough. Able to bring sterile operating conditions to even the remotest parts of the Philippines meant people were seeing modern medicine coming literally to their doorstep. Not only that, this was a team able to use three operating tables at once and doing up to 50 operations a day. This was the kind of efficiency and level of expertise that Dr. G had dreamed all his life of being able to achieve and finally, he had done it! Not quite done yet, this book is unusual in that it contains over 130 colored photographs with some unique and never before published ones of the fighting in the S. Sudan and the Ebola outbreak in Liberia.
