An Exhausting edible journey

Mr. Majumdar has a unique writing style that infuses humor into his passion for food. His journey starts after his 40th birthday, while looking at a list of things he had hoped to achieve by that age. What a wonderful way to kick off the second half of one's life! The author grew up around a "food centric" family, and he has a photographic memory for meals he's had over his lifetime, and has an insatiable appetite for creating more memories. His writing style is vivid and he infuses it with some great cheeky British humor. All in all, this a fun adventure, that can be read in any order. Enjoy it. Savor it.

Don't eat dried cane rat

This is the most engrossing book I've read in a while. The author is quite witty, and many times while reading it I had to stop and wipe my eyes and take a deep breath. The book is pretty simple. He hated his job, but liked to eat, so he spent a year travelling and eating. You get one recipe out of the whole book, and a lot of first-hand notes about where he went, what he did, and what he ate. He isn't shy to say what he thinks. Chez Pannise, for instance, disappointed him greatly. Sushi made from cod sperm was even worse. He doesn't want to ever talk about the dried cane rat. He spends a little time on everything he did on his trip and he seems to have had a grand old time. In one brief chapter he brings up Anthony Bourdain as his nemesis. That disappointed me because the rivalry could have filled most of the book. Both the Author and Bourdain have eaten live cobra hearts, for instance, but there was no mention of the rivalry in that chapter. Overall, I loved this book. It was well written and fun to read.

Obsession!

This man is completely nuts about food, and a fabulous writer. He makes you wish you were along for the trip, but about five pages in you realize you couldn't possibly keep up. He describes his trips with bright details, just enough to make you feel included and as surprised as he is, not enough to be a tedious travelogue, a quick sketches of his fabulous meals. It isn't just the food, though. It's what the food means to those who cook it, those who share the meal, the pleasure he takes with his meal companions. He isn't impressed by famous names, he's impressed by glorious food. He passes right over San Francisco (really, he was ill), but devotes an entire chapter to a friend whose oddities and endearing kindness introduce him to our tradition of Thanksgiving and the rather generous definition of family at most large Thanksgiving tables. I'll be giving this to food-lovers as a gift, knowing they'll enjoy imagined and remembered travels, as well as the companionship of Simon Majumdar.

Awesome Foodie Fuel!

This is an extremely well written book on a subject which is very dear to my heart... FOOD and TRAVEL! For those of you who don't know Simon Majumdar... I didn't before two weeks ago, he is one of the most read food bloggers in England. This book came about not because Simon wanted to write a book about food, but because he wanted to "Go Everywhere and Eat Everything" as the tagline says on the cover of the book. And he did just that. One of the most remarkable things in the book is that he doesn't just go to the low end eateries, or the high end ones, but he really does eat everything. He has an incredible eye for detail and really knows how to write. A word of warning though, this book made me starving! Have something snugly to eat on hand, trust me. I had the pleasure of meeting Simon Majumdar during his book tour when he stopped into Philadelphia last week. He is an incredibly unpretentious, well-spoken chap who just loves food, loves writing and loves to share what he finds. He has inspired me to write my own food blog and was lovely enough to comment on it and is a follower of [...] I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in either food, or traveling.
