A Short, fast read about survival and personal discovery

As a Vietnam vet having been stationed at Fort Ord in the late 60's I was particularly interested in reading Weger's novel, East Garrison, and I was not disappointed. Her descriptions of the rolling chaparral-coated sandstone hills, coastal fog and mist accurately portray a place once covered with 1940's military barracks, a hospital, target ranges, tanks and foot soldiers a place now being transformed into a state university campus, retail strip mall and a residential subdivision. In spite of the redevelopment, much of the land remains hostage to the pervasive danger of unspent mortar rounds and military pollutants yet to be burnt off, a place where Nature seems to thrive and continues to foster her own dangers. This book is a short, fast read about survival and personal discovery. Tracy Dade, middle-aged and nine months pregnant, enters this hostile territory in an attempt to find her estranged, nazi-hippie father who is there only to tend his small crop of cannabis sativa. In this unfriendly zone, for her baby's sake, she is forced to take charge of her own life mustering up the physical stuff around her while taking note of the things that before this time had seemed meaningless. What had previously seemed complex and complicated had become quite simple.
A REAL PAGE TURNER!

A stunningly impressive debut novel, "East Garrison" combines the tale of four unique characters caught in a dramatically dangerous, life-altering situation with the fascinating history of the former Fort Ord military base. As she's about to give birth to her first child, Tracy Dade feels compelled to locate her long lost father, a mentally tormented Vietnam War veteran, and try to repair their shattered relationship. But Tracy's simple wish to have a normal, loving family life sets off a chain reaction of events with potentially disastrous consequences. G. W. Weger's fast-paced plotting and vivid descriptions leave her readers anxious to find out what happens next. "East Garrison" is a real page turner that will keep you reading far into the night.
AUSPICIOUS AND BRILLIANT DEBUT

G.W. Weger takes the reader beneath the calm exterior of a closed-down military base into the darker reaches of the human soul. Written in spare, stark prose, the writer's characters are sharply etched, fully realized human beings in torment. Like the protagonists of Revolutionary Road, they are trapped in a world not necessarily of their own making - and certainly not of their own liking. Tracy's estranged father Jack, who would have been a good and loyal Nazi soldier, is that most magic of characters - a villain who is not a villain, and who, in his own bizarre way, is the most engaging in what amounts to a den of vipers. Tracy, the primary character, is haplessly, hopelessly conflicted. Now, facing the imminent birth of her first child, she realizes that she is NOT in control of anything - her life, her emotions, he raison d'etre. Her husband is the epitome of the unbending police officer - one who simply doesn't "get the larger picture." An assortment of lesser characters rounds out a "ship of fools" headed for oblivion. Yet, this is a thoroughly rewarding read - and a mesmerizing and memorable one. I predict a bright future for this superlative young writer. - Hugo N. Gerstl, Author of Scribe, Amazing Grace, The Legacy, Coming of Age, Misfire!, and Standoff
