Two independent novellas: EARTH PRINCESS: science fiction with a fantasy twist. THE RUNNER: Military hard-science fiction EARTH PRINCESS It is the year 2057. In the sleepy village of Wiggin's Corner on isolated Kent Island, Maryland, Allan Rosen, a professor in neurophysics, comes to relax after a hard academic year. He meets Rachel, an eight-year-old girl, and her family who are hosting a group of friends chatting about events of the day. They are, however, members of the hundred-year-old Society for Intellectual Development, and their children excel in many dimensions, including intellect but also kindness, emotional stability and intuition. The children also report having a fun, shared, dream-world fantasy that occupies them with exploration and adventures. Over the next year, Allan is integrated into the group and is at the picnic for the East Coast Branch of the Society when something astounding, something impossible, happens. And that changes everything. THE RUNNER It's the year 2082, 45 years after the end of the cyber and hot wars. Earth is divided firmly into three major alliances: Europe-North America, Russia and Asia. International corporations follow their own allegiances. Abuses in artificial intelligences have been addressed with clear constraints. AI have evolved into 'person' status. Large AI run large military bases and ships at sea and space under human chains of command. Competition and conflict between the alliances have quieted now that enormous wealth is being mined in the asteroid belt, based on a Mars in process of being terraformed and colonized. This has negated the age-old guidance of an economic and geo-political zero-sum game. Why compete, let alone fight over claims, when everyone can share unlimited resources? Each of the three major alliances have Mars bases, but only civilian and minor military repair and supply spaceships dock there. Suddenly, a top-of-the-line Russian Space Navy battleship is heading in, without diplomatic warning, indeed without any communications. Is this the start of a new phase of hostilities? The EU-NA stealth surveillance spaceship Lethbridge with its analysis team leader Commander Kim Hann, civilian analyst Jake Segal, and Chief Alejandro 'Flex' Martinez is sent to find out. What they find astounds them and threatens a global and Solar System-wide conflict.
