Beautifully Poignant

Excellent, beautifully written story. The characters are so believable and your heart just breaks for them. After reading the novel I discovered that part of it was based on the author's own life. It was no wonder then that Ms. Graham was able to describe with such eloquence the heartache, longing and love between the main characters. A very satisfying novel that unfortunately has all but disappeared due to its age and mistaken irrelevance.

Enlightening and ultimately uplifting

Being a Canadian I was shocked to discover the realities of my beloved country's treatment of Jews during WWII. Ms. Graham's novel is well written and the characters are vivid and strong. Erica Drake is a woman torn between her genteel father and the Jewish Marc Reiser, both of whom she respects and loves dearly. Set against the backdrop of Montreal during WWII it is a tale of both a nation and a couple struggling with anti-semitism. The ending was beautiful and right. One of the most satisfying novels I've read this year.

Read this book

Having read about this newly released book recently in the papers, I had to get it. Fanatical about Canadian literature I was amazed that I had never heard of this author. The story moves beautifully between historical and fictional and had me glued to the pages from start to finish. Although melodramatic at times, the characters are entirely believable. It truly is a shame that more people are not aware of this novel. It's a wonderful definition of Canadian society during World War II. Read this book. You won't regret it.
