Churchill's return in 1924 as Chancellor of the Exchequer brought triumph and disaster in equal measure. His decision to restore the Gold Standard triggered an industrial crisis and contributed to the General Strike of 1926, further isolating him from labour and liberal opinion. By 1929, despite decades at the heart of government, he once again found himself out of office - this time seemingly for good.
