Hard Boiled with a Heart

In Early Bright, Author Ami Silber takes us for a ride on the rough side of 1940s L.A., but even though her protagonist, Louis Greenberg, is a con man who's good at his trade, the man, and this book, each have a heart - as witnessed by Louis' skill and deep love of jazz piano which gives him entree into the black clubs of South Central, and his deep and true love for a woman the world says he cannot have because it's post-war L.A. and he's white and she's black. The language is both noir tough and poignant with a true author's gift for descriptive language. It's a good ride, raw and steamy and heartfelt, too. The ending wrung me out, and it was worth it.

I have just one word for this book, and that is "outstanding". The protagonist, while not especially likeable, was extremely compelling. And the picture painted of Los Angeles during this era made it come alive for me. I recommend this book to everyone who likes jazz, history, or just a good read!Early Bright
