Dying To Talk

There is a serial killer targeting Central Louisiana University ... but no one knows it yet. President Joseph Saunders is frustrated that his university has been saddled with the unfortunate reputation as the place where people keep going missing. The media has given them the moniker "The Disappeards." It's hurting enrollment which, to him, is more important than where these people are. He prefers to think that they just moved on to do other things and are not really missing. The issue is overblown, he thinks ... a mere statistical aberration. Turns out ... he's wrong.

In this, John Garic's sophomore novel, university life is laid bare. The academic ivory tower crumbles to a metaphorical basement of philosophical and literal repulsion. Universities are filled with highly intelligent people. But those intelligent people are also human beings. That means that they are often petty, jealous, petulant, self-centered, insecure, narcissistic, condescending, selfish, mean-spirited, and, well, pretty much just like a lot of us.

For Associate Professor, Kaylyn "Kay" Sisser, however, the descriptor of "serial killer" must be included. In charge of the Biology Department's Cadaver Lab, Kay's job includes purchasing new cadavers each year for the Anatomy classes. She makes the purchases, but she also has, from time-to-time, "supplied" cadavers for the classes. Her "people" she calls them.

But, as advances in the biological sciences have proven repeatedly, even in the darkest and most poisonous and forbidding of places, life finds a way, not only to survive, but to thrive. Such is possible even at Central Louisiana University through the potential of the education of sharp students and the enduring power of love between two people, graduate student Katie Brindle and rookie FBI agent Brock Winter.

In today's world of social media, talking seems to be a lost art. But when talking is the last thing you may get to do on this earth, "dying to talk" becomes a pretty important need. Your answer to the question "Do you have any last words?" may be the most important talking you will ever do.
