This is a chronicle of Irish immigrant Denis Dwyer and his sons, focusing on his son James F. Dwyer. Denis' first job at Rondout, New York was shoveling coal at Island Dock in the Rondout Creek that arrived via the Delaware and Hudson Canal. He began buying properties with apartments that he would rent to other Irish immigrants and help them find work Denis also began refurbishing and financing boats which led to his eldest son James starting a barging business at a fairly young age. James' brothers joined the operation named Dwyer Brothers. They got involved in other industries in the Hudson Valley such as a ship chandlery, ice harvesting, brickmaking and boat building. Denis' eldest son James became a bank president and bought the home Cloverly at the top of West Chestnut Street which today is a designated historical district.
