Two souls occupy one body In this mystery, who survived?

A former New York thug serving in the Union army and a Confederate who is former rancher from Texas with a wife end up in the same shell hole. As dawn approaches only one man leaves, but with him he carries the souls of both men. As the adventure unfolds the survivor makes his way home to Texas since the Yankee is a murder wanted in New York with a price on his head. In different circumstances the personality of the Yankee murder takes over and at other times, the Rebel from Texas who is a just and kind man. Only one soul can survive in the body and the struggle continues. Only one soul will live, but which one? Which man survived and whose body is it? This is a great tale of the west with a real supernatural twist. Parkinson books of the west are never ordinary. He like to add a supernatural twist, or humor, or sometimes both to his books. They may be classified as westerns but believe me, they are not traditional westerns by any stretch of the imagination. Why no one has yet discovered this gifted writer and turned his books into blockbuster movies I don't know! They are different that most any other books and well crafted. You won't want to put this one down and you'll return to it time and again.

read it many times still not sure who lived

synopsus; Near the end of the Civil War, as a newyork city hired substitute tried to desert and is captured by his squad. Caught in an artillery bombardment with a troop of southern calvery, the protaginest finds himself in a shell hole with the mortally wounded Texan who looks like him. But is it really the Texan who is mortally wounded or the newyork boy? The protaginest travels toward Texas because there is nothing in NYC for him. Incredable study of the human conditioning and adaptivity, and the depictions are abolutely right on the money, no cardboard cut out figures here. I've read this book many times and still don't know who lived but there is a happy resolution not a sad ending to the book. If anyone could tell me who they think lived I'd be greatful
