The reality-changing event known as The Great Convergence took place at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in upstate New York. This irrevocable incident created the futuristic Fluxterra, the land born of the now-defunct Earth. After David meets Kimber, a student at the university, she convinces him to go with her on a road trip through the warped landscape of Fluxterran America.

Along with David's colleague and roommate, a resurrected Albert Einstein, the trio navigates a country populated by mutated creatures, mythological beings, and divine entities. Their travels bring them to locations like a comedy club with performing gods of various pantheons, a diner specializing in psychedelic Americana food, and a town inhabited by a hivemind who only barters for goods and services with art. David tries to enjoy himself while on this journey as his feelings for Kimber begin to grow. However, David guards a secret he fears will prevent anything from developing between him and Kimber: his own immortality.
