Corporal Sam learns about "ducking" after he starts receiving rubber ducks on his Jeep's door handle. Initially hesitant to participate, he changes his mind after meeting Kelly. Kelly had left Sergeant Larry (a marine duck), Sam's first duck, on his dashboard, which is affectionately referred to as "the duck pond." As the story unfolds, it's revealed that the ducks on the duck pond come to life when Sam and Kelly are not around. Throughout the story, Sergeant Larry makes new friends all while keeping an eye on Sam. Sergeant Larry is protective of Kelly as she was his first human.
