Dru the Draggin' Dragon is an enjoyable and affirming story of a dragon child named Dru. The story within the story is about a performance Dru and their parent do as a "Mama Kangaroo" and a growing "Baby Kangaroo" (a joey) about the need to be free to explore and be oneself not constrained inside a pouch or bag that doesn't fit. Like their "Baby Kangaroo" character, Dru finds that people asking personal questions about gender and trying to categorize them in a way that did not fit Dru's needs, did not feel good and finally Dru expressed the truth of the matter, set boundaries and encouraged others to respect the dignity and privacy of others, become more open and accepting of one another, and not to limit themselves or others. Dru's final statement of the first book is a theme that will carry through all Dru's adventures, "We can be whomever we wish, whether we're a human, or a dragon, dog, cat, or fish!"
