Drought is a serious threat to crop production in most areas of the world and can result from any combination of the physical factors of the environment to produce sufficient internal water stress in plants to limit their productivity. The major effects of these deficits are to delay or prevent plant establishment, to weaken or destroy stands, to predispose plants to insects and diseases, to limit plant growth, and to reduce the quantity and quality of the harvested product. Drought is often a factor in yield reduction even when the damage is not apparent.
