Driving to a Funeral

A man waves goodbye to his family on the coast of California and drives to the funeral of his childhood friend in Denver, Colorado. But the journey doesn't end in Denver as planned and it's not long before events conspire against him and force him to keep moving. The people he meets along the way propel him onwards or perhaps he has already decided to leave his life behind? This collection of interwoven stories asks the reader to make their own connections, to invent their voices, assume identities and wrestle with the contradictions. Step inside, but be aware, the unhelpful timeline will not always travel straight and there are no chapter headings to guide the onlooker through the confusion.

We reside in the present as much as the past inhabits us. The two are inseparable, don't you think? By all means, plan for the future, but don't expect the future to hang around for you. It's a deliberately unpredictable space, as nature would like us to prefer, but our preferences mostly side with order and control. Highways with their intersections. Choices to be made. Brave is the traveller who takes the off-ramp and ventures down the backroads into the wilderness to lie on a slab of rock and dream of deliverance.

Three times the author has journeyed through the United States of America. Three road trips with different start and finish points and a different cast of characters along the way. Each 'story' here incorporates elements from each of those road trips plus experiences from times before, in between, and since. A travelogue made fictional, if you like. Past, present, future all jumbled. Overlapping mosaic memories. In fiction, as in life, anything is possible if you don't look back.
