In 1945, I navigated a B-29 Superfortress around the world from Kansas to Idaho. Although the 21,000-mile journey took nearly 90 hours, I logged over 600 flight hours in a B-29 during World War II. During this time, I experienced some of the lowest, darkest points of my life - spending my first Christmas away from home alone on guard duty, being chased by kamikaze fighters, and getting lost over the Pacific Ocean. I also had some of the greatest experiences of my life, such as flying over Mount Everest, participating in the surrender of Japan by flying over Tokyo Bay, and air dropping supplies to POWs in Saijo and Shikoku, Japan. The culmination of it all was returning home to be reunited with my wife and meet my daughter. This is my story and tribute to the sacrifices made by those who fought in this conflict and the memory of the many generations that preceded us. Their sweat and blood made us who we are today.
