A taste of things to come...

A gripping first novel from this author, who writes strongly from personal experience. Knowing a little about his background, I can only imagine that we will see more of the same from Gabelhouse in the future. He is a true storyteller, who writes as if he is sitting telling you the story himself. Characters were developed very quickly, but this was perhaps because you know that most of them are real characters.... This is not a 'formula' novel, so the form of narrative might be not be comfortable to all readers, but the lucky (or unlucky!) folk who have tread a similar path in life will relate to this book and will be looking forward to more.

What we have dreamt of in our philosophy

Good characters, good setting, good plot. This book is a good read. For the first time in years, I found myself staying up late, reading a book, wondering what was going to happen next. As a Christian, I was a little hesitant about this book because of some of the other reviews. But I have to say, while there was darkness in it, the book does not indulge in, nor celebrate the darkness. There is nothing mean-spirited in the tone, it is not a modern, gothic point of view. Indeed, the book has almost an establishmentarian vigor in its portrayal of the struggle between good and evil. While the main character suffers through some heartbreaking moral ambiguities, in the end, when he faces up to true evil, he proves himself to be true blue.

Good read, but a few too many expletives

Gablehouse is obviously a well versed, well read individual. His use of expletives in the book does detract from its content somewhat, but the overall schematic is excellent. The author allows the reader to become engrossed in the terrain and peoples of Kenya, Africa. The back and forth timeline is also helpful in creating the backbone of the story. Gabe Turpin is an interesting character, albeit married and away from his family incessantly (or so it seems). Turpin is an American but spends a great deal of his life hiking and backpacking in the wilderness of Africa. Gabe is seeking a particular African tribe which "dreams" itself into other's realities. Very interesting juju...and makes for great entertainment. This being the first book written by the author, I'm certain that his future endeavors will blossom and expand as he becomes more comfortable with the writting process.

Dreams of the N'Dorobo

This is an amazing book. In addition to being a well written page turner, the book gave me some real insights on a part of the world and a culture I knew very little about. Top notch read.

Exotic, Gritty Fiction At Its Best

Gabelhouse has written a page-turner, to be sure. But that is just half of it. Intertwined with the suspense, the adventures, and the sense of Africa, are themes of the mystical, the metaphysical, the unknown--the unknowable. This adventure book is a success both by the normal standards of a thriller, and more so by its penetrations into the world of the ultimate mysteries, the final adventures, the spirit dreaming itself back into life, in the land of the Mau-Mau Oath Giver, the Dream Walker. It is the combination of story and insight that raises this book from a well-wrought thriller to the level of distinguished literature.John Stevens Berry, for the Lincoln Journal Star
