Essay by Dave Hickey An expert and precisely selective journey through the sunshine noir of greater Los Angeles, documenting a well-worn but little-known trail from the Hollywood sign to the San Fernando Valley: that of the porn industry. Photographed in voluptuous and lingering detail, Burton's bizarre but serene compositions proffer an exquisitely refracted take on action in dreamland. Illustrated with 156 full-colour photographs.
This book literally took my breath away. Ignore all of the other reviews which complain about the repetitive "Hollywood" signs-- The individual does not know anything about sequencing and the placement of photographs next to each other. Burton has a particular eye when it comes to sequencing and playing certain images next to each other and in both of his books, especially Dreamland it is evident. Flipping through Dreamland is almost like watching a David Lynch film, yet not quite the same. I aspire to be like Jeff Burton. Butron's ability to make ugly acts appear glamourous is a true gift. If you are interested in the porn world or Hollywood, this is your book. The reproductions of the images are OKAY, don't expect a lot since it is a Power House publication and it'll probably be in some bin at Urban Outfitters for 1.99 in a few years.... all bent and destroyed. Pay the money to get an excellent copy. Unopened. Shrink-wrapped. Take this books virginity...

Jeff Burton is an amazing photographer. His book covers and uncovers it all! It is sexy, funny, shocking, and beautiful. I find it difficult to choose favorites. I love the man with tattoo and the woman's nylons. The cat and the shredded draperies made me smile. Burton's work can be so subtle and then pow! When will we see book 3?
A Thought-Provoking Treasure and Feast for the Eye

I find Dreamland a beautiful, disturbing, heartachingly sensitive "story" of human desire. For those looking for yet another cheesy peep show, this book is bound to be a disappointment. For anyone interested in exploring the borderlines where lust and virtue, gratification and despair, dreams and reality, generosity and commerce blur, this book is a thought-provoking treasure and a feast for the eye.
Jeff Burton's 2nd Book

Burton's second book has a different feel to it than his first. "Dreamland" feels grittier and more contemplative. The sun has set, the shoot has wrapped and 'characters' that appear from page -to-page seem almost repentant. The abandon and irony of "Untitled" gives way to a more documentary examination of the artifice that surrounds Los Angeles and the porn industry in particular. This book makes an excellent counterpoint to the first, but does not exceed the creativity or polish of it.
