The book was pricey and that kept me from purchasing it initially, but I'm so gad I did because it has got to be the the most comprehensive collection of Aboriginal art (probably in the world - or at the very least in the top five percent). There are hundreds upon hundreds of actual photographs of original works and they are stunning, totally mesmerizing. The book itself probably weighs 9 or 10 pounds (or at least that's how heavy it feels when you pick it up, it is enormously huge and heavy and the size offers up very large images - a smaller format would not do justice to the images but this size brings them to life. The descriptions are incredibly detailed and lengthy. Geissler tracks the entire history of each artist going into great detail about his/her first adventures in their art making journey, their lineage, and how their art making came to evolve into their own personal narrative which represents them today and/or at the pentacle when each displayed piece came into being. I don't believe my review can do justice to this incredible compilation of magnificent Aboriginal art. It is a must have for anyone who wants to add a fantastic book to their art collection. It is well worth the price and will provide you with endless hours of viewing and reading. It will fill you with a lifetime of images that are reflections of Aboriginal culture and the authentic reasons this art was created and how it was directly representative of the beliefs and needs of the culture.
