Pop was born in 1880 near the town of Athens, Tennessee. His mother died when he was four, and he was raised by his father and grandmother until 1892, when they both died during a flu epidemic; then, two of his mother's sisters took the job of raising the children. He didn't like school as a boy and went only because he was made to go. As a result, he could barely read and write until he joined the army. He served in Cuba and the Philippines during the Spanish-American War (1898-1905). While in the army, he started reading everything he could and continued until the days when his eyesight got so bad. Even then, he listened and continued learning. He was a hardworking Irishman who worked on the L & N Railroad for over thirty years. He loved to tell stories and to listen to others. It is possible he heard this tale sitting on an old store front porch somewhere or he just made it up. No one can say for sure how it happened. He loved baseball and played several years in the minor leagues in Texas and Georgia. He broke his leg, just above the ankle, by stepping in a gopher hole in spring while training with the St. Louis Browns.
