With the encouragement of his parents, attorney Claude E Hammond and pediatric dentist Chris J Baker, Trey graduated from high school with honors. But Trey wasn't finished yet. Even though his parents had planned for him to attend a community college in their hometown of Lexington, Kentucky, he had other plans. Trey had decided to attend East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas -- it was the only college to which he applied. Trey's attendance at ETBU was his first experience living and studying independently. Known for its rigorous academics, ETBU had never had a student with a diagnosis of autism. Both Trey and the University had a "learning curve" on new techniques and methods effective with students who have developmental delays.
