Demons and dreams oh my!

The audiobook was well done. The narrators, Mia Hutchinson Shaw and Jared Zeus did a good job in bringing Esmer, Shadow Bringer, and the other characters to life in this dark world of nightmares, demons, dream weavers, and so many secrets. The concept was cool too with dreaming meaning the characters open themselves up to demons which lead to corruption, possession, and then death at the hands of the Lightbringer and his followers. That being said, I could not fall into this story, at least for the first half of the book. To me it was messy in its concept and I found myself confused with the dreaming within dreaming within dreaming, and I was not a fan of how Esmer and the Shadow Bringer were together, it kind of grated at me and I had to take breaks listening to let the frustration and confusion fade. Now, the last part of the book with Esmer and the Shadow Bringer frantically traveling through the last dream and how it explained everything, plus the academy and the Light Bringer's part in all of it seemed like an entirely different book and I liked it much better. That is what redeemed the story and I am more inclined to see what the second book will be like. As a debut, it is alright and I would say the audiobook is well done, despite the weak points in the story. 5 stars for the narration and 3 stars for the story.
