Stick-to-it-iveness.

Drawers and Booths is a really fun book with much substance to think about when you're finished (one gripe, there is very little useful information about either drawers OR booths, maybe an eighth of a star off for that.) I leave it to the other reviews to give you an idea of the many interesting themes and iconoclastic style. Suffice it to say, I truly enjoyed it cover to cover and laughed out loud quite a few times, which I had sworn never to do in New York. By way of disclaimer, I should say that I talk to God frequently and he regards the book with fuzzy tolerant affection, so I was swayed by his positive review, as is often the case. I will be enthusiastically recommending it to friends, as I do to you people.

What?!? Entertaining AND Intellectual? Brilliant!

Readers looking for an intriguing read, look no further! While highly entertaining and written with Ara's sharp sense of humor, the most notable feature of this piece is its ability to challenge the reader on so many levels. From the nature of narrative, character development, and reader-author relations to the formation of belief and questions of moral justice, this book will challenge you to reconsider and closely examine everything you thought you knew, as well as how you came to know it. The writing is tight, and the plot(s) is/are dangerously addictive. However, it is the questions raised and the invitation to personal self-inquiry that makes this a story that is sure to linger in your mind, even after the final page is turned. One can only hope that a second work is soon to follow.

Auspicious First Novel

This book is an onion. Jarring at first, but pulls wonderfully together. There are so many elements I found enjoyable. As each transition was foisted upon me, I marveled over the structural daring; yet had numerous laugh-out-loud moments. I had no idea a book could be all this. At times, Drawers & Booths had the profundity of a Randian tome, but without the 60-page diatribes. Ara's succinctness nearly underplays the depth of evolutionary insight: ala Trivers, Selfish Gene and the like. His modern military plot-skeleton is equally riveting and elucidating. It is not your cliché, rifleman story, but one easily believed from actual journalistic gleaning. There are more surprises for sure, and I fault those who let the cat out of the bag on too many of them in these reviews. Ara nails the theology; he nails the satire; and he does such, only asking a humble 200 plus pages from the reader. There is much here. If you are used to linear reads, however, I caution you. Do not go into this book with intent, as if it were a business text you were perusing or a crime novel, the words of which you suffer just to see who did it. Let go. Just read. Let Ara steer you through the fragmented structure; I promise you, it all pulls together, brilliantly, breathtakingly. This is an auspicious first novel. Worth every cent, even just to see the possibilities of metafiction. There is much to discuss, from literary technique to the many topics touched: military, law, theology, and of course, a great discussion on morality, done so mindful of fuzzy logic. Again, I am amazed. Buy this book. Buy it right now and hope he has another in the works.

Thought provoking and fun

Ara 13 uses quite of bit of literary license with his first published book and I enjoyed it. The book brings all the hard topics; War, God, Sex, and the judicial system: with a little tongue and cheek thrown in for flavor.
