Draw 4: Just when you thought you would win

John went to lick a some food off the foil of his TV dinner but as drunk as he was it was difficult to navigate and a mound of molten hot mashed potatoes burned his nose. He dropped the TV dinner tray on the table and the peas rolled everywhere as he ran to the sink to put his face under cold running water. That was the last thing he remembered before he fell into a deep sleep on the couch. His marriage was a wreck, his wife kicked him out of the house and he needed a place to stay. The next day at work, April was standing by the coffee pot smiling and humming as she poured her coffee and this irritated John. When he was in a bad mood, he wanted everyone around him to suffer. She said hello and he grunted in reply, grateful that she had not asked about the beacon on the end of his nose. He asked if he could borrow the newspaper that she was holding, because he needed to find an apartment. For some reason, he started to tell the story about his wife kicking him out and needing a place to stay. April could tell that this man did not need to get drunk with the guys that he just needed a sympathetic ear so she asked him if he wanted to get a bite to eat after work. John and April shared their broken heart stories and he even told the real story about how he burned the tip of his nose. This was the first time he was able to laugh about it. April looked at the clock and noticed that it was after midnight and they still had to drive back and get Johns car. She suggested that he sleep in the spare bedroom and she would drive them to work in the morning. The office was buzzing the next morning when they saw John's car and he was nowhere to be found. They wondered if he had done something drastic because he had been depressed the last few weeks. The buzzing grew louder when they saw April and John drive in together. The gossip really took off when they noticed John was wearing yesterday's clothes and a huge grin. Phil took the opportunity to turn to his coworkers and say, "See I told you she was straight". The gossip reached a new level when they saw John's car full of boxes and he went to the Human Resources manager and gave them a new phone number and address. They were the new odd couple.
