A New Testament Study of the Doctrine of Baptism in Water

Oscar Brooks' book on the drama of baptism in the New Testament Church offers a middle of the road approach to baptism. On the one hand, Brooks teaches that baptism does not save us but we are saved by faith in Christ (John 5:24) however he also shows that baptism is cloesly linked to New Testament coversions (Acts 2:38,41; 16:14-15, 30-34). Brooks first takes the reader through the Jewish teaching on baptism (John 4:1-2) and then he takes us through the baptism teachings of John the Baptist and Jesus. Finally he takes from Jesus' Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) to the way the disciples in Acts implimented Jesus' words. Acts clearly reveals that the Apostles preached baptism as part of the drama of decision. To simply "believe" was not enough but true faith would obey Jesus (John 3:36; James 2:14-26). DRAMA OF DECISION was a solid work for my own studies early on on baptism. While I still differ with Brooks overall conclusion (that faith alone saves apart from baptism mainly since I see faith involved in the drama of decision) it was a breath of fresh air since Brooks (like Beasley-Murray) goes against evangelical traditions of so-called "believer's baptism" and reveals that water baptism is much more (Romans 6:1-4; 1 Peter 3:21-22).
