In 1969 a young man from Wisconsin drops out of college and is drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam War. During his basic training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky he experiences drill sergeants screaming obscene language and long days of physical pain and exertion. Humor becomes part of his routine to make the days more bearable. The "Big Green Weenie," which is a derogatory slang word used to describe the Army, becomes his nemesis. His army career takes him to Denver, Colorado where he works in a military hospital and he experiences further diversity. He gets married and he and his wife begin their life together. He is placed on "levy" for assignment to Vietnam but ends up serving in Germany. This book is a real life journal based on letters he wrote and received while serving in the military.
