The turn of a friendly card - The Alan Parsons Project

It is the 1920s. What is the best way to earn a living? You guessed the answer from the title “Dr. Mabuse the Gambler” (1922). A novel by Norbert Jacques, published in the “Berliner Illustrierten Zeitung,” gets the rewrite treatment by Fritz Lang (director) and a screenplay by Thea von Harbou. It is a two-parter originally released as two separate films, with acts (each act can be a standalone story in itself) as if it were a play; still, the original film is not complete. The presentation is made from the reconstruction using two camera negatives: one is of the German version, and another was made for international distribution. The opening titles are in English, so we do not have to scratch our heads trying to remember German class. We also get new English intertitles. The few pictures of papers in German are simple enough to read, so do not be distracted; they eventually get overlaid with English. (Excellent translation being anglicized.) The plot and acting are more sophisticated than you would anticipate for a 1922 movie. Dr. Mabuse must be the good guy, as he has a library and reads. One could learn how to decorate his/her house. The movie itself has a Professor James Moriarty feel. I will not be giving a blow-by-blow description of the contents of the movie, as you will want to watch it unfold on your own. However, I think part one ends with a cliffhanger and cannot see it being a stand-alone. If you are unlucky and miss the first part, there is a synopsis on part two to get you up to date. The whole experience is over way too soon. Carefully choose the media, as the movie is improving with each release.
