"Down The Road of The Forsaken" follows the life of a young orphan, Sammy, and draws in other experiences and events in order to bring to the fore a larger picture of a life experience of communism intertwined with the firsthand witness to the heart-breaking lives of children during the orphanage crisis in Romania. In the large tapestry of pain and suffering, of which I am sure nobody is a stranger, this story is but a few threads interwoven to reveal sorrowful passing life moments. And while the characters of this story are not fictional, their names are, in order to protect their identities. The orphanage crisis in Romania continues in the memory of many. The years after the fall of communism left in its tumultuous aftermath not just suspicion, rightfully so, but a dark mentality, a "eat or be eaten" attitude and a drab corruption, willing to go to any lengths, even to the hurt of others, in order to preserve and increase one's wellbeing. Now, after fifteen years in Canada I realize these Canadian waters are also changing, they are darkening and the waves start to crash on the shore more violently, bearing the stench of the all too familiar monster awakening and luring the children of men with its "righteous cause" and "saving grace". This wave of deception comes under many different names, birthing bastard offsprings of self-righteousness and hatred, turning brother against brother in the name of an ideology. The same dragon, different head. I have no doubt that these pages will create different emotions for different people, that it will bring questions or disagreements. I do not demand that this be a universal, undisputed story, but that it is my story. And at the same time I hope that it will awaken the true conscience of many to recognize a slippery slope when they see one. I refuse to believe that we are doomed to never learn from history.
