This is the second book in the Farot Quartet. Readers follow Jer me Farot, Antoine's second son, through his early years. The story begins with his birth in his grandmother's living room in Minneapolis Minnesota. The tale ends at the close of his freshman year at a Catholic high school in the inner city of Los Angeles. Throughout the story Jer me finds himself conflicted over his cultural identity. His first friend, when he was a toddler, was George Nieto, a Mexican-American who lived next door to him in Long Beach, California. When he reaches eighth grade, he meets Tommy Riley, and Irish/Italian-American, who hangs around with Chicanos and thinks of himself as a Chicano. Thus, Jer me has finally discovered his true identity.
