Personal favorite of a marine biologist from Newfoundland

This book was first published the year I was born, in the same province. The verses from "Down by Jim Long's Stage" are among my earliest memories, and I can still rhyme off most of them today, almost 30 years later. I don't know if I can blame the book for my fate, but I've found myself in a career as a fisheries biologist, and I can scarely see a codfish, sculpin of squid without the words coming back to me. I'm no longer a child, and have never been a fish, but thanks Al and Pam! As long as there are copies to be had, this book is going to be a required gift to all the youngsters (and young-at-heart) in my life.
A wonderful and recommended rhyming book for young readers.

Written by Al Pittman, Down By Jim Long's Stage is a justifiably classic picturebook cherished for 25 years, now reprinted in a special collector's edition. The rhymes about various different fish are pleasant, lyrical, and make for excellent reading to young people before bedtime. The charming color illustrations of the various add a special flair, so distinctive that they earned the Canadian Library Association's Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award for Best Canadian Illustration in 1977. A wonderful rhyming book for young readers, and enhanced with new illustrations by Pam Hall, Down By Jim Long's Stage will continue to be treasured for many more years to come.
