Down Among the Muddy Hearts and Swamp Roses: A Ms. Graves Mystery

By Hugh Aubyn

Felicity Graves crosses many borders not least those between the ordinary and supernatural worlds. This book is a deliciously eccentric English take on a magical Southern mystery. A formidable English spinster turns detective in the deep South in order to find her missing cousin resulting in a darkly humorous tale redolent with mint juleps, chicken fry-ups, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and a soup on of magic.Cousin Mary's daughter, Emmaline, is missing somewhere in the Mississippi delta, several thousand miles from her home in Hexham, England. Felicity Graves, retired public school headmistress, has promised to find her. The sleepy town of Greenwood, MS guards its secrets well. The rambling back roads Ms Graves must navigate in her quest hide a labyrinth of peculiar characters each searching for their heart's dark desire. With uncanny luck Felicity may have found her salvation in this enigmatic landscape. If her unexpected companion, Willie Cato is not entirely her idea of a tour guide, and she, a crazy English lady, is not entirely his idea of who ought to be behind the magnificent engine of a '66 Chevy Nova, then their relationship has nowhere else to go really but on into the Delta's muddy heart. Nothing can prepare them for what they will find.
