Doug: A Collection of Memories From Growing Up in the 1950s

Growing up, nobody talked to each other. So when I found out at 18 that my name was not legally the name I thought it was, and that my dad had always lived just a few miles away and wanted nothing to do with me, I still never asked anyone in my family why.

Why no one ever told me so many important things about our family history and why I never even thought to ask...

It's just the way things were back then. Only recently, as many of the people I have questions for are no longer here to ask, have I started reflecting on my life's story.

With this book, I want to show how different the world was when I was growing up - like how my high school teacher punched one of my classmates in the face and no one batted an eye and how the cops shrugged and let me go when I blasted fireworks off onto the hood of their police car...

I also want my family to have answers about their history so they don't find themselves with the questions that I still hold onto.

I don't know everything about our family history, but I do remember many of my experiences - the fun, the painful, and the parties. I'm sharing it all here in hopes that you all see the importance of staying close to those you care about and enjoying life while you can.
