Entrusted with a cargo of 2,000 Henry rifles--weapons that can turn the tide for the Union--and $15 million in newly-minted gold eagles, Captain Thomas Gunnison must lead a caravan across the Mexican... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is the fourth book that I have read by this author and while not as good as The Trespassers I found it a interesting read with a different slant than most western books. It had enough action ,romance, and good and bad characters to keep me interested to the end. The story is about a Navy captain thrown out of the service for sinking a slave ship without proof. He then turns to doing private dangerous shipping with great results. He is contacted by a repersentitive of the U.S. Goverment to haul $15,000,000 in gold from Calif. to a Union port to help finance the civil war. Trying to get the gold is the captain of the slave ship he sunk, Mexican bandits and others who distrust him to deliver as promised. He is hampered in this by his son who has disowned him and a surprise young woman partner in his ship. All in all a interesting fast moving tale.
Wonderful
