Nathan and Pete met at Yale. A couple of years after graduation, Nathan is introduced to Pete's British wife, Dorothea. Over the years, Nathan forms a close relationship with the couple. Dorothea hosts groups of their friends, including Nathan, for dinner parties at their modest apartment in New York, while Pete works on finishing his first novel.Once Pete's novel is published, his career begins to gather momentum.
