I am going to be visiting Shangri La this week, and was given the book as a present before my visit. I have read the book cover to cover, enjoying the history of Doris Duke as well as the house and grounds. When I visit the house and grounds, I will have a great understanding of the information that I am being presented with by the docent. Having been raised in Somerville, NJ I am very familiar with Doris Duke as she has a huge farm very close to my hometown. This is mentioned in the book.

I've been waiting for this book forever. Being interested in the rich and famous of the past, Doris Duke is at the top of my list. Shangri La is just that. Heaven on earth. What a beautiful place. While Islamic art is not on my list of things to see, Miss Duke knew how to put things together to make a tranquil resting place. This book has wonderful pictures and very informative text. I was in Hawaii in 2001, not knowing Shangri La was not open yet until I was told my the tour guide. I hope to go again and visit, if not for the art, but for the fabulous grounds and scenery. This book just wets your appetite for the real thing.
