Book Overview

Doonesbury's The War in Quotes is a startling account of the Iraq War, told entirely in the words of those who conceived, planned, advocated, and executed it. Presented in chronological order in thematic groups against a timeline of key events, this astonishing record of remarks both public and private speaks for itself, chronicling the dramatic unfolding of America's first preventative war.

THAT WAS THEN

"Once you've got Baghdad, it's not clear what you do with it. It's not clear what kind of government you put in place. How much credibility is that government going to have if it's set up by the U.S. military?" --Dick Cheney, 1991

MIND-SET

"F*** Saddam. We're taking him out." --George W. Bush, to three U.S. senators, March 2002

WMD

"If the president wants to go to war, our job is to find the intelligence to allow him to do so." --Alan Foley, director, CIA Weapons Intelligence, to staff, December 2002

THE PLAN

"There was no guidance for restoring order in Baghdad, creating an interim government, hiring government and essential services employees, and ensuring that the judicial system was operational." --3rd Infantry Division's official after-action review

INSURGENCY

"I really qualify it as militarily insignificant. They are very small. They are very random. They are very ineffective." --Maj. Gen. Ray Odierno, June 18, 2003

REALITY

"Does the Iraq war strategy] make America safer?" --Sen. John Warner

"I don't know, actually." --Gen. David Petraeus, in Senate testimony, September 11, 2007

Bush and Cheney should have been impeached-- this is the evidence is

The war in Iraq was a reckless incompetent adventure, which destroyed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The timeline of quotes by the "principals" clearly exposes the cynicism with which they misled the American people into a disastrous and unnecessary war. What a nation of suckers, and what tools of the government the "respectable media" have proven to be. Bush was probably the worst president we ever had, not only because of his ignorance, but because he set up his government on the basis of ideology and loyalty with no consideration given to competence and truth.

The War in Quotes

If you want to see, written down, the statements and weird Bushisms as they said it, get this. It's well worth reading and gives you key dates via a timeline at the bottom of the pages. I found myself almost laughing, then remembered how the Bush Administration took us down this road.

It's a crime that this book is so funny

"The War in Quotes" clearly and simply documents the Orwellian double-speak that has characterized the Bush administration and the multiple strings of lies that brought us the quagmire in Iraq.

Awesome

This is very well put together, its like a storyline made of real (and ridiculous) quotes made from the Bush regime. There were things said that was even shocking in here, and its amazing how many of these wern't made into a bigger deal.

More than just a quote dump

These are brilliantly juxtaposed to create a joyful, hilarious, absolutely heartbreaking record of the most tragic foreign policy fiasco in American history. It's also a breathtakingly concise indictment of our country's worst presidency.
