Don't Bypass the Breakthrough: Presence Matters More

By Michael Clegg

How many times have we heard words meant to comfort that actually bypass the heart?

Move on.
Everything happens for a reason.
Just have faith.
Stay positive.

Sometimes people do not need another explanation. They need someone who will stay.

In Don't Bypass the Breakthrough: Presence Matters More, Michael Clegg invites readers to stop moving around life and begin moving through it. With honesty, humor, Jewish wisdom, Deaf insight, and lessons drawn from everyday life, this book explores grief, anger, healing, boundaries, hospitality, laughter, and the courage to remain present when life offers no easy answer.

Through images of broken-down cars, open hoods, hallways, walls, thorns, ashes, embers, gardens, fences, and tables, Michael shows that breakthrough is not always a sudden escape from pain. Sometimes it is the moment we finally tell the truth, ask for help, respect the body, set a healthy boundary, receive kindness, or realize we are no longer alone.

This book is for anyone who has ever felt overlooked, silenced, rushed, excluded, or pressured to "get over" what still aches. It offers a gentler and more honest path: one that does not decorate the thorns, sweep away the ashes, or force the garden to grow by shouting.

Inside these pages, you will discover:

Why more than one emotion can be true at the same timeHow anger can become protective courage instead of destructive fireWhy privacy, boundaries, and accessibility are forms of stewardshipHow laughter can live beside grief without erasing itWhy hospitality requires more than simply saying, "Everyone is welcome"How presence can become more meaningful than having the perfect answerWhy the way through is often the way forward

The breakthrough is not found in pretending pain is unreal. It is found in learning to move through life with truth, tenderness, wisdom, and hope.

You do not bypass your way into the Garden City.

The road may still be long. The hood may still be open. But when the cables are finally connected, life can begin moving again.

Presence matters more.
