Donna's parents leave on an extended business trip to India. Donna and her younger brother Jimmy are left in the care of a young teacher. Marjorie is more lax than Donna's parents, but that proves problematic when running a household. Donna doesn't do her assigned chores properly, causing troubles with the housekeeping funds and their gruff housekeeper. Marjorie and Donna get caught up in their own social lives, and don't give Jimmy the attention that he needs. He seems to have two emotions - boistrous and angry. But always hungry! I don't understand why Donna ignores her dove - she doesn't care for it properly, leaving it on the screened-in porch during a blizzard, so the poor thing gets sick. And she hasn't even named it! There are bad situations with a party, Donna's excessive babysitting, neglect of Jimmy, and mishandling of a donor's property - she just doesn't seem to be thinking throughout this book. At the end, all is well, domestic mysteries solved! These Donna Parker series books are very much of their time, though, and one needs to keep that in mind. Plus, they make me want a chocolate malted!
