I first read this when I was about 9 or 10. I loved the series, because my name is Donna! However, re-reading this now, I'm disappointed. Donna just seems to be so self-absorbed, lacking in empathy, and just not very likeable. I realise that these books were written in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The book opens shortly after Donna's parents have returned from a lengthy trip to India. Donna's focus is more on her uncle's promised trip to Hollywood (California), and never asks her parents how their trip was, what they saw/did, etc. She begins dating a boy with two first names (!) and seems to be more concerned with her own thoughts and feelings. He asks her out again at the end of their date, and she doesn't even answer him! More important - her best friend Ricky suffers a devastating loss and Donna is only able to focus on herself - not at all considering poor Ricky, not even asking her mother for advice. The action peaks when Donna attends a wedding with disastrous (but avoidable) results. Of course, at the end, all is well. The book didn't change, but I certainly have!
(PUZZLE: Donna had a pet dove at the end of 'On Her Own', and there is NO mention of the poor unnamed bird in this book.)
