The Dog We All Wish We Had

This story is testament to Zane Grey's love of animals, and his insight into just how much a person can get to know an animal and how the animal can get to know man. The first line of the story tells it all: "It has taken me years to realize the greatness of a dog; and often as I have told the story of Don--his love of freedom and hatred of men--how I saved his life and he saved mine--it never was told as I feel it now." Zane Grey first met Don on his first trip to the Grand Canyon with Buffalo Jones to rope lions in the Grand Canyon. And while on this trip met many of the people he would turn into the characters of his novels. If it had not been for this trip I doubt we would have the Zane Grey we know and love today, nor such a fantastic body of work to read and enjoy.
