Book Overview

This is the complete orchestral and vocal score of Mozart's Don Giovanni, considered by many to be the greatest opera ever written. This edition contains all the music Mozart wrote for Don Giovanni, both for the original version performed in Prague (1787) and the alterations―Don Ottavio's aria "Dalla sua pace," Elvira's aria (and its transposition to D Major) "Mi trad? quell'alma ingrata," Zerlina and Leporello's duet "Per queste tue manine," the cut in the finale ― made for the first Viennese performance six months later, as well as the concert ending of the overture.
The editors, Georg Sch?nemann and Kurt Soldan, worked directly from Mozart's autograph manuscript and from early copies made under Mozart's supervision, correcting many errors that had persisted since Mozart's time. An extensive commentary lists all vague or controversial elements the editors encountered in the score. In addition the complete Italian libretto and stage directions by Lorenzo Da Ponte and a German translation of the vocal text by Georg Sch?nemann have also been included.
Do not confuse this with a piano rendering; it is the full orchestral score. In addition to its obvious uses for study, this score is also an indispensable associate for anyone listening to the music. In no other manner can the listener or student keep full awareness of the many elements that make up this opera.

Great Paperback Score!

IN an age when opera scores are expensive and some out of print, it's wonderful to find a company who is keeping singers and accompanists well stocked. My old score fell apart. I was delighted to find that Dover's pages corresponded to my former score. I now am replenishing my library, and give scores as gifts to young promising pupils. BRAVO DOVER!

Great music, great score

I bought this score for my son and he has been conducting ever since. My son, Oliver Aldort, is only 14, but he is a national winner cellist, pianist and conductor. He bought this score to work on his conducting of the overture in November. The score is clear, easy to look away and come back to, and of course, it is Mozart!

Excellent companion

Don Giovanni is a simply wonderful opera, but for this single-language speaking gal I was at a loss for understanding. I looked high and low for a good translation, finally deciding on this which has side-by-side readings of the opera in itallian and english. It's easy to read. It has a good introduction and great footnotes that give you a little extra information to take with you as you read. Unlike other companions, it includes every word spoken, so you don't get lost when they repeat themselves! There's really not much to say about it -- simple, straightfoward, and worth the money.

Outstanding as Usual

One of the world's best operas printed by one of the world's best publishers - it couldn't be much better. Dover Publications' scores are always of the highest quality: Large pages and clear type for ease in reading, and a sewn spine (not glued) for flexability and durability. To make it even better, contained between the well-fabricated covers of this score is arguably the best opera ever composed by arguably the best composer the world has ever seen. Ladies and gentlemen, it doesn't get any better than this. If you like Mozart or if you like Don Giovanni, be sure to acquire this score as soon as possible.

Yet another excellent Dover publication

Dover has done it again. This opera (one of the best ever written) is done up beautifully for everyone; from someone just looking into an opera for the first time to an experienced veteran. I would recommend it for all. As a bonus, it includes the Concert Ending of the Overture, the Transposition of the Aria No. 21b and the But in the Finale No. 24. The Editor's Commentary is also very informative and interesting. A must have for any Mozart lover's collection.
